Summary

The Yacht Club de Monaco is hosting the 14th Monaco Optimist Team Race this weekend, welcoming 60 young sailors under 14 from 12 nations for one of the most prestigious team racing events in the Optimist class, combining high-level competition, tactical sailing and international youth development.

The Yacht Club de Monaco is hosting the 14th edition of the Monaco Optimist Team Race this weekend, bringing together 60 young sailors under the age of 14 from 12 countries to compete in one of the most respected events on the international Optimist sailing calendar.

Launched in 2010, the regatta has built a reputation as a key proving ground for emerging sailing talent, with a unique format that places emphasis on teamwork, tactical intelligence and performance under pressure. Fifteen teams of four sailors are contesting more than 150 head-to-head races from the opening ceremony earlier this week through to Sunday’s finals.

Over the years, the event has attracted some of the strongest youth sailing programmes in Europe and beyond. Swiss teams from Société Nautique de Genève and Gstaad Yacht Club dominated the early editions, before Germany, Finland, Turkey and Monaco claimed victories in subsequent years. More recently, American teams secured wins in 2020 and 2022, while Croatia’s JKU Deep Blue delivered a surprise triumph in 2023, reinforcing the event’s reputation for uncovering new international talent.

What sets the Monaco Optimist Team Race apart is its team-based, head-to-head racing format inspired by the America’s Cup. Rather than competing individually, sailors race directly against opposing teams, where communication, coordination and tactical execution are essential. Success depends on collective decision-making and the ability to read conditions and manage pressure as a unified group.

In the lead-up to competition, participating teams took part in the annual International Clinic, held earlier this week and supervised by Chris Atkins, a three-time British National Team Race Champion and former coach of Team Great Britain at the first ISAF Team Race World Championship. The clinic provided young sailors with advanced tactical training and a deeper understanding of team racing strategies.

Racing began on Thursday with round-robin qualifiers and continues through the weekend, culminating in Sunday’s finals. As the competition reaches its decisive stages, Monaco once again takes centre stage in nurturing the next generation of international sailing talent.
