Summary

Municipal election candidate Louis Sarkozy has proposed renaming Menton’s Sablettes esplanade in honour of former mayor Jean-Claude Guibal, as part of a broader initiative to recognise the town’s past leadership.

Louis Sarkozy, a candidate in Menton’s 2026 municipal elections, has unveiled a proposal to rename several public spaces in the town to honour former mayors, beginning with the Sablettes esplanade.

The central proposal would see the site renamed the Jean-Claude Guibal Esplanade, in tribute to the former mayor who led Menton from 1989 to 2021 and oversaw the redevelopment of the waterfront area, which was inaugurated in 2018.

Sarkozy has also suggested the creation of a local commission composed of prominent community figures to identify and recommend additional sites for commemorative naming.

Another potential project under consideration involves recognising the legacy of General Emmanuel Aubert, who served as mayor between 1977 and 1989, by identifying a landmark associated with his tenure.

Presented under the banner of his electoral list, Renouveau Mentonnais, the initiative has sparked public debate, with some critics questioning whether the approach reflects renewal or a focus on the past.
