Summary
36.5 kilograms of litter, 237 cigarette butts, and 100 pieces of chewing gum were collected by CM2 students from Institution François d’Assise-Nicolas Barré during a coastal cleanup in Monaco, organised with support from the Monegasque Sanitation Company (SMA).
Students from the CM2 class at Institution François d’Assise-Nicolas Barré took part in a hands-on coastal cleanup of Monaco’s Marine Education Area, highlighting the impact of litter on local beaches.
Over six days, Monegasque Sanitation Company staff collected and weighed discarded waste along the coastline. Students then participated directly, sorting and removing litter including 36.5 kilograms of trash, 237 cigarette butts, 100 pieces of chewing gum, food packaging, and fishing debris.
At the conclusion of the activity, each student received a ‘Coastal Protector’ certificate from SMA, along with collection bags and educational tools to promote ongoing environmental awareness. The initiative encouraged practical learning, fostering a sense of responsibility and turning participants into ambassadors for marine protection.
