Summary

The Oceanographic Institute of Monaco begins a new era in ocean advocacy with the appointment of Julia Marton-Lefèvre as President and Sylvie Goulard as Administrator, strengthening the Principality’s leadership in marine conservation and environmental diplomacy.

For more than a century, the Oceanographic Institute of Monaco has stood as one of the Principality’s most recognisable and respected institutions. Founded in 1906 by Prince Albert I, its mission has always been clear: to deepen understanding of the marine world and inspire global commitment to its protection.

Today, the Institute remains a strategic international platform where scientists, policy-makers, philanthropists and the public connect around one shared priority — safeguarding the ocean.

As Monaco prepares to welcome a new year, the Institute also opens a new chapter in governance and strategic direction. On 10 December 2025, Julia Marton-Lefèvre was appointed President of the Oceanographic Institute. A Franco-American environmental leader with an extensive international career, she has served on the Institute’s Board since 2017 and brings a global perspective in conservation, diplomacy and education.

Alongside her appointment, Sylvie Goulard has joined the Board as Administrator. With an established reputation in European institutions and sustainable finance, she contributes deep expertise to discussions on environmental strategy, governance and resilience building.

Both leaders have held prominent roles supporting ecological transition and climate resilience — experience that aligns closely with Monaco’s ambitions for ocean action, environmental collaboration and innovation-driven sustainability.

Speaking on the appointments, Robert Calcagno, CEO of the Oceanographic Institute – Fondation Albert Ier, highlighted the importance of strategic leadership at a time when global ocean management requires knowledge-based decisions, strong international alliances and long-term vision.

The Institute continues to operate as a key pillar of Monaco’s environmental identity, echoing the commitment of H.S.H. Prince Albert II, whose long-standing advocacy positions the Principality as a reference point in marine conservation.

As the Oceanographic Institute looks ahead, its mission remains unchanged — to inspire respect for the ocean and mobilise global actors toward a sustainable future — while its renewed leadership signals a confident step toward that horizon.
