Monaco Expands Marine Protected Area to Safeguard Posidonia Meadows

The new measure extends protection to critical seagrass beds along the Larvotto and Cap d'Ail coastline.

MONACO — October 20, 2026 — The Monaco Government has announced the expansion of its Marine Protected Area (MPA) to include additional critical habitats for Posidonia oceanica, a seagrass species vital to Mediterranean biodiversity. The expanded zone, which extends from Larvotto to the border with Cap d'Ail, will enforce stricter regulations on anchoring, fishing, and coastal development to protect the fragile underwater meadows. Posidonia meadows serve as nurseries for marine life, protect coastlines from erosion, and act as significant carbon sinks. Monaco's waters are home to some of the best-preserved Posidonia beds in the region. The expansion is part of Monaco's commitment to the "Mediterranean 2030" sustainability goals and follows extensive consultation with marine biologists and local stakeholders. Monitoring of the newly protected areas will begin immediately, with public awareness campaigns planned for 2027.
