Monaco Introduces New Restrictions on Single-Use Plastic Food Packaging

MONACO — September 5, 2026 — New restrictions on certain single-use plastic food packaging have entered into force across Monaco as the Principality continues its efforts to reduce plastic waste. Since September 1, retailers have faced restrictions on specific plastic wrapping used for fresh, ready-to-eat food and some pre-packaged products with very short use-by periods. The measure focuses on packaging designed to be discarded after a short period of use. Certain exceptions remain where plastic packaging is considered necessary for food safety, preservation or waste prevention. The Prince's Government has spent recent weeks working with businesses to prepare for the changes and promote alternative packaging solutions. The new regulations represent another step in Monaco's wider strategy to reduce single-use plastics and encourage more sustainable consumption.
