Opéra de Monte-Carlo Launches Its First Film Production

MONACO — September 9, 2026 — The Opéra de Monte-Carlo is expanding beyond the traditional stage with its first film production, a screen adaptation of Christoph Willibald Gluck's celebrated opera Orphée et Eurydice. The production stars Cecilia Bartoli, director of the Opéra de Monte-Carlo, in the title role of Orphée. The project marks a new chapter for the Monaco institution as it explores film as another way of presenting opera to wider audiences. The adaptation is intended to translate the musical and dramatic language of the stage into a cinematic format while preserving the work's central themes of love, loss and devotion. The film is currently being developed for release to audiences in 2027. The initiative also reflects the Principality's broader commitment to cultural innovation and to presenting Monaco's artistic institutions through new media. With its first cinematic production, the Opéra de Monte-Carlo is opening a new avenue for its artistic programme while maintaining its connection to the classical repertoire.
