Saharan Dust Raises Air-Quality Concerns Across Monaco

MONACO — August 30, 2026 — Monaco is experiencing a period of deteriorating air quality linked to Saharan dust carried northward across the Mediterranean. According to measurements from the Directorate of the Environment, PM10 concentrations could approach the official pollution threshold of 80 micrograms per cubic metre. Weather conditions are also limiting the dispersion of pollutants, contributing to their persistence in the atmosphere. Authorities are advising residents to reduce intense outdoor exercise and limit prolonged exposure near heavily trafficked roads while the episode continues. Monaco continuously monitors atmospheric conditions through five air-quality monitoring stations across the Principality. The stations measure several pollutants, including particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide and ozone. The latest episode demonstrates how atmospheric conditions beyond Monaco can influence local air quality and highlights the importance of the Principality’s ongoing monitoring network.
